Tropical Imports is an importing firm based both in Canada and Brazil, situated in the heart of one of the best hammock producing regions of Brazil and the world.  Tropical Imports works closely with hammock producers in Ceará, north-eastern Brazil, to ensure high standards of quality at competitively low prices.

Tropical Imports is committed to social development in this region of Brazil and as part of their company policy they refuse exploit impoverished people or children.  On the contrary, Tropical Imports works to improve the lives and circumstances of the people they (and therefore the end customer…you) buy from.  Tropical Imports is against economic exploitation, and will seek fair prices for the products we export/import.

The hammock industry has been a tradition in Ceará, a state in northeastern Brazil, for about 100 years and is characterized as being a predominantly familial production or cottage industry.  The producers use several strategies to help limit the production costs, like hiring relatives and trading hammocks for new thread when they cannot sell their current stock.  Hammocks produced in the cottage industries are made in the producers own home, and the textile looms are often manually operated and non-electric.  More modern factories use electric looms which require manpower only to monitor the machines.  This means the hand made hammocks of the Ceará are higher quality and are better, economically and socially, for the people of that region.
