In
1863 the U.S. postal service began delivering mail to home addresses.
During these early years the mailmen would knock on the door and wait
patiently for someone to answer. It became apparent that each mailman
spent an average of 1.5 hours each day just waiting for patrons to come
to the door. To alleviate this inefficiency, customers began to install
mail slots or letterboxes to receive mail when they were either not at
home or unable to answer the door. This evolved into today’s
mailbox.
